So today I'm brewing up Illy's whole bean coffee in it's medium roast. I've been wanting to try it, but at $15.99 for a little over 8oz. I couldn't bring myself to do it... However I just so happened to catch it on an extreme sale.
This coffee is protected like Fort Knox! It's in a metal can and under it's screw top there's an added layer of freshness protection in the form of a pull tab. This is also the first time I'm grinding my own beans since I've started my search. To be honest I'm not sure it adds to the flavor or not. I do like the fact that you can see the the different levels of roast in the color of the beans. This roast has ground into a nice blondish color and the fragrance is nice and tart.
As it's brewing I find the aroma is good but very subtle. I'm excited because I just noticed on their can that there claim to fame is "perfecting Italian espresso since 1933". Ok, so the flavor is very smooth, not at all bitter, really there's not much flavor to it. It could actually use a little bitterness. It does have an even taste from sip to swallow, but the best part is in the after taste. This is a perfect example of why I started this blog, to find a coffee that taste as good as it smells. This smelled wonderful before the brewing process, but I'm afraid the aroma was all bark and no bite! If you like a mellow coffee this could easily be your go to.
I give Illy's medium roast a 3 out of 5, and I wonder if I did something wrong while brewing this up...
Interesting coffee factoid:
In 1511 Muslim's considered banning coffee in the city of Mecca because it was thought to promote "hanging out" and stimulate "radical thinking".
